It amazed me that he could not remember being at our presentation as our presenter was very good. However, just thinking about this made me realise just how poor human recall is. I suppose that this is understandable if compared to other situations.

Using This Bias

We know people are hard wired for negativity and for “loss aversion” (feeling the pain of loss more than an equivalent gain), and the psychological research backs this up. We are less motivated when an argument is presented as being able to gain something as opposed to when the argument is framed as helping to avoid losing something. Marketers and salespeople realise this and know that you will have greater success if you can remove a pain or a problem than by making somebody better at something. From this also comes “FOMO” or the fear of missing out. Many people have strong emotions when someone passes away, even if they did not know them very well. It is the sense of loss that triggers the emotion. Knowing that this is how we are wired can help put some of our negative thinking into context. It's our neurology at work, and we will look at changing it in Part Two.
